THE OMMATIDIA LAMP
A lamp inspired by the ommatidia inside the eye of a blue-eyed ensign wasp, created using humble materials.
Building on specimen analysis of the blue-eyed ensign wasp, this project translates abstracted biological diagrams into a light sculpture that explores form, shadow, and spatial experience. Rather than producing a literal representation, the design interprets the specimen’s geometry and pattern through structures that engage transparency, opacity, and light diffusion.
An iterative prototyping process using sustainable, humble materials allowed for refinement of both structure and craft while prioritizing the human experience of light. Digital modeling in Rhino 8 supported the development of dimensioned drawings and assembly diagrams, complementing the physical object. The final piece bridges research and abstraction, transforming natural morphology into a functional design object.
DIAGRAM
The purpose of this diagram is to highlight the ommatadia in the eye of the Blue Eyed Ensign Wasp. The ommatadia are essential to the survival and function of the wasp, as they provide acute vision. The wasp uses its acute vision to find its prey, a cockroach egg,
